Should you paint or stain your fence?

Both protect the wood and boost curb appeal; they just do it differently. Paint gives you unlimited colors and a uniform look, hides imperfections and lasts longer per coat, but it can peel over time and can't easily be reversed. Stain soaks into the grain, keeps the natural wood look and is cheaper to refresh, but it shows more of the wood's age and needs redoing sooner.

If your fence is newer cedar or you love the wood tone, stain usually wins. If you want a specific color or need to cover an aged fence, paint is the better call.

Fences we paint and stain

The material decides the prep and the product. A wood picket fence and a vinyl privacy fence are two different jobs.

  • Wood fences: pickets, privacy fences, split-rail and post-and-rail, cleaned, sanded and sealed against UV and moisture
  • Vinyl and PVC fences: cleaned and coated with paint formulated to bond to vinyl, in colors that won't overheat and warp the panels
  • Metal and wrought-iron fences: rust treated and primed before a durable topcoat that protects against corrosion
  • Chain-link: sprayed with the correct coating for a clean, updated look

The prep that makes a fence job last

Fence painting is mostly prep. Skipping it is why a cheap fence job peels or grays within a year.

  • Ground protection: drop cloths to catch drips and protect your lawn and beds
  • Cleaning and pressure washing: dirt, mildew and loose old finish removed so the new coat bonds
  • Sanding and scraping: graying, splinters and flaking paint taken back to a sound surface
  • Repairs: loose boards, popped nails, rust and minor damage addressed; we'll flag any section that needs replacing
  • Drying: wood must be dry before staining or painting, so we time the work to the weather

Should I paint or stain my fence?

Paint offers any color, a uniform look and longer wear but can peel. Stain keeps the natural wood look and is cheaper to refresh but needs redoing sooner. We recommend one based on your fence's material and condition.

Can you paint vinyl or metal fences, not just wood?

Yes. We paint wood, vinyl and PVC, metal and wrought-iron, and chain-link, each with the correct prep and coating for that material.

How long does it take to paint a fence?

Most fence projects take 1 to 2 days, depending on length, material and drying time.

Do you power wash and repair the fence first?

Yes. Cleaning, power washing, sanding, scraping and minor repairs are all part of our prep so the finish bonds and lasts.

What warranty do you offer on fence work?

Fence painting and staining carry a 2-year exterior warranty.
