Cabinet painting vs. replacement: which makes sense?

If your cabinet boxes are structurally sound and you like your kitchen's layout, painting is almost always the smarter spend. Replacement means demolition, new boxes, longer timelines and a much bigger bill. Cabinet painting keeps your kitchen's footprint while changing what you actually see: the color and finish.

Painting makes the most sense when your cabinets are solid wood or quality MDF in good shape, you want a new color without a full remodel, and you'd rather have the kitchen back in days instead of weeks. If the boxes are water-damaged or falling apart, replacement may be the better call, and we'll tell you honestly which one your kitchen needs.

Spray vs. brush finish

The finish method changes both the look and the price. Spray finishing gives the smoothest, factory-like surface with no visible brush marks, ideal for a modern, seamless look. Brush and roll costs less in labor and works well for a more traditional finish or where spraying isn't practical.

Either way, we use a bonding primer so the topcoat sticks and holds up to daily use.

Cabinets we paint

Kitchens are the most common request, but cabinetry lives all over the house:

  • Kitchens: cabinet doors, drawer fronts, boxes and islands
  • Bathrooms: vanities and storage cabinets
  • Laundry rooms and mudrooms: utility cabinetry
  • Bedrooms and offices: built-ins and storage
  • Garages: workshop and storage cabinets

If it's a cupboard, cabinet or built-in, we can refresh it, including installing new hardware you've picked out.

Our cabinet painting process

Preparation is what separates a cabinet job that lasts from one that chips in six months.

  1. Free estimate: contact us and we'll give you a customized quote that spells out the total cost.
  2. Remove and label: we take off doors, drawer fronts and hardware so every surface gets an even finish.
  3. Prep and clean: we cover floors and counters, degrease all surfaces, repair nicks and scuffs, and sand or degloss so the primer bonds.
  4. Prime and paint: a bonding primer goes on first, followed by durable topcoats, sprayed or brushed depending on your finish.
  5. Reinstall and clean up: we reinstall doors, drawers and hardware (including any new pulls you bought), then clean up.

Most cabinet projects take 3 to 4 days, depending on the number of cabinets and drying time between coats.

Cabinet painting FAQ

How long does a cabinet painting project take?

Most cabinet projects take 3–4 days, depending on the number of cabinets and drying time between coats.

Is painting cabinets cheaper than replacing them?

Yes, significantly. Painting keeps your existing layout and boxes and costs a fraction of replacement, with a like-new finish in days rather than weeks.

Should my cabinets be sprayed or brushed?

Spray finishing gives the smoothest, factory-like result; brushing costs less and suits a more traditional look. We'll recommend the right method for your cabinets.

Do you handle the doors and hardware?

Yes. We remove and reinstall doors, drawer fronts and hardware, protect your kitchen, and can install new handles or pulls you've purchased.

What warranty do you offer on cabinet painting?

Cabinet painting is backed by our 3-year interior warranty.
